This is a nonsense test.

RDC is for syncronizing altered files over slow networks.

You should have put your 4gig file on a remote server over ADSL or dial-up, then changed some stuff inside it, then used RDC to sync the files.

You would then have discovered RDC is about 135937500 seconds faster than re-uploading the entire 4gigs a second time to the remote server... (assuming a regular ADSL1 connection)

Thanks so much for the insight!

I don't think most people realize that this actually can also contribute to issues with downloading/uploading online if your internet is through a network (such as a university network). I've seen several forum threads where people had this issue and never had it resolved.

I've dealt with glitchy audio in conjunction with high download speeds for months now. Glad the problem has finally been pinpointed. Hopefully the issue goes away.

@Janet: There is another way renaming files without using the explorer. You can use the tool File Renamer:
http://www.sttmedia.com/filerenamer
With this tool it is possible to number files in your user defined order and you can do some other things like searching and replacing in file names. Additionaly, the explorer always adds brakets () around the numbers. In File Renamer you can specify this for your own.

In order to play VOB files in WMC you need to link the IFO file to the movie in Movie Collector, NOT the VOB file. For example..

Rip DVD to folder will give you the AUDIO_TS and the VIDEO_TS.
In the VIDEO_TS you will have files such as (this is just an example your files may be a little different)

VIDEO_TS.BUP
VTS_01_0.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB

The VIDEO_TS.IFO is the file that needs to be linked to th title in Movie Collector. Once you do the search and get the title just right click the title and click edit movie. A box will pop up and you go to the last tab on the top labeled links. The lower box will have some buttons one of which is "Add Movie File" next to local. Find your movie folder and select the VIDEO_TS.IFO Then just click on the WMC button to see and play your movie.

Note that the play option in WMC is in the upper right hand corner not the actual play button.

This is the only way I know how to make the movie play.

I Rip only the movie no menu's using the same setup as listed above in the origional post and it works very nicely.

Hello there - I read your post with interest and a sigh of relief because my son is distraught at not having Pinball on our new PC (Vista operating system).
There was one post with the same problem, that of the WAVMIX.INF missing. You emailed the required files to Chris around the 2nd November 2008 so can you do the same for me please?
I have tried the new zip link and I'm still getting the same error message. I've also tried the http://drop.io/Vistapinball link but the download limit has been reached.
Thanks in anticipation of your help. Have bookmarked this site for further use. Neil Haggart

You can reset A Lost Vista Login Password easily with windows password key 8.0. It is very easy to create a
recovery disk that you can use on any Windows PC. It works perfectly to reset any local user account to a blank password. Just an easy to use bootable CD/DVD . It can also be used on a USB Flash Drive. http://www.lostwindowspassword.com/

If you can't see the Show Desktop icon, try displaying more of the Quick Launch toolbar by clicking the double chevron icon . If that doesn't work, you might need to add the Quick Launch toolbar by right-clicking an empty area on the taskbar, pointing to Toolbars, and then clicking Quick Launch so that it has a check mark next to it.

I have downloaded Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0 from http://sn.im/resetwindowspassword it not only supports XP, 2000, and NT, I have personally tested it with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. It works perfectly to reset any local user account to a blank password. I Wrote it to an old 128mb USB flash drive do this. GUI interface with mouse clicking instead of command prompt

@ dhana,
You will need to edit the Registry to make this change. If you're not confortable editing the Registry you may want to not make this change.

1. Create a Restore Point.
2. Go to start And type in the Windows Vista Search box regedit and press enter.
3. Approve the UAC

Now that you have your registry editor opened find the key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

4. Now right click in the window on the right.
5. Click on new DWORD (32-bit) Value.
6. Name the new Key NoTrayItemsDisplay
7. Now double click on the key and assign a value of 1 to the key.

Now you’re finished, Reboot your system your system tray should be Icon free.

i had pinball on windows xp. LOVED IT! miss it now that i have vista!!!

so i just followed the instructions here:
clicked on the link, downloaded the pinball file, pasted it into the vista games folder, and inside the pinball folder, there's an icon that opens the game, so i just copied that icon (the silver pinball by itself) on the games tab in the start menu.

simple. back in action!!

thanks for the game upload!!!

This only hides what becomes a problem for many people. Those icons in the system tray represent a program that is running, a program that few really ever need running in most cases. I would say it is far better to disable the auto-run of the program that you don't need than to simply hide it. CCleaner works very well for this, but you can use the msconfig method as well, just be careful not to disable anything important.

That said, yes, sometimes it is also nice to hide the icons for programs that you DO want/need running in the background, and this is an easy, built-in way to do so.

You are missing one backslash that will make it work for Vista:
 (old) “%SystemRoot%explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D”
(new) “%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D”

So restore defaults doesn't do anything. I also ran McAfee, but that didn't turn up any viruses or spyware. The place where my problem differs from this article is that whole folders have gone missing randomly, but when I type in the folder location manually in the directories bar, they come up, otherwise they don't come up at all.
Thanks for the help

@ Leland, you can try the Restore Defaults button, If that doesn't help I would run a good virus and spyware checker to see if you have infection. Anything that blocks your ability to see hidden files is a sign of infection.

So, I've followed all the steps in this article, but the place where I get stuck is that the show hidden files and folders selection circle is not there. Instead there is a black square that I can't get rid of. So, I can't select the option to show hidden items. How can I get around this?

Hi,

I also found the Windows File Explorer to be crappy and went searching for a new file manager. I found FileQuest Gold from PiQuest software (www.piquest.com).
FileQuest is great, it allows me to open multiple windows for copy and paste operations, and it also has a great personal folder feature, where I can define what sorts of file types I want to appear in each folder. I use this feature all of the time because I take lot's of pictures, and trying to keep them organized was a nightmare until now.
In sum, FileQuest Gold is great, I am a loyal user, and I see that the company is still in the software business, having just released FileQuest 7 Gold.

tx,
Mike

Regarding Space Cadet, my computer uses XP and somehow, I've lost Space Cadet, which is the only game I play.

Can I download the file directly to my computer?

Could you send me the direct link to run it from XP.

Kind regards,

@ Dennis, Not sure it's not working for you. You want to make sure the computer in not hibernating and is idle for at least 10 min before that time. also check your power settings to make sure your hard drives are not turning off.

I've setup Disk Defragmenter in Vista for every week on Wednesday and at 6:00 pm. Will not work on automatic. Have to do it manually.

What's up??

Thanks for this. I've been trying to figure out why I've only been transferring files at 5mb/s when I have a gigabit network and using cat 6.

It definitely worked. I'm transferring at 75MB/s now.

For those getting an error message when they put the Pinball exe file into the games folder on the start menu,
just right click it and click pin to start menu. Then drag the icon that's been created in the start menu into the games folder. It basically just creates a shortcut, which is all that is required

@ Jay, Thanks for leaving a comment. I never tested syncing files so that may be the case, I only tested moving files around my network.

But turning off RDC did improve my transfer times, and yes most of my machines are Vista except for the 1 lone XP box, And Service Pack 1 seems to have fixed the issue.

RDC is not meant to send whole files, so that's why it may be taking longer for plain old file transfers. But if you are syncing a whole 4GB file between two computers, RDC will vastly improve the time to do so. In the past, the whole file had to be resent if one of the copies had been changed. RDC sends only the changes. Also, keep in mind that for this to work, both machines have to be RDC capable, which would seem to imply that you have to have all Vista machines.

As Chris said above. Vista is not slower at copying, XP just tells you it's done when it really isn't. I'd rather the OS do its thing and tell me when its really done, otherwise I'll yank the USB key or network cable and potentially lose data!

@ Wary and Confused -- Scam??
In order to make a shortcut for users running Vista Basic and Home Premium you need to add a file called tsdiscon.exe, to the C:\Windows\System32 folder and that file is hosted on Drop.io for people that don't have it.
