Ever since Vista Service Pack 1 was installed the Search box was removed from the Start Menu. Here’s a way to get it back. Not in the exact place but close.

Lets start by creating a shortcut for Search on the desktop.

Press the Windows key on your keyboard along with the F key to open the Windows Search box.

Left click the magnifying glass and drag it to your desktop.

Now if you want you can rename the shortcut by right clicking it and choosing rename.

Now you can leave it right here on your desktop if you like or if you want it back in the Start menu. Left click the icon and drag it over the Start Orb until the Start menu opens then drag it to the left side of the menu and let go. Now Search is back to the Start menu.

Y Changes the title of the game displayed at the top of the
window from “3D Pinball for Windows-Space Cadet” to “pinball”

H Gives you a high score of 1,000,000,000, but always puts the
score below the top highest legitimate score.

M Opens a box of the amount of memory currently used by the game.

R Promotes you to the next rank up.

Microsoft calls it “Secure Desktop” and it is a security feature in Vista that prevents virus and malware from sending a “click” message to the secure prompt dialog, which basically means they can do the honor of clicking OK for you. That being said if you are comfortable giving up some security here’s how to disable it.

In Vista Home and Home Premium.

Click on the start Orb and type regedit in the start menu search box and press enter.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

Navigate to the following registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem]

Double click PromptOnSecureDesktop.

Change the Value data to 0 and click Ok.

That’s all there is to it.

In Vista Business and Ultimate.

Click on the start Orb and type security in the start menu search box and click on Local Security Policy.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

Now in the Local Security Policy window, expand Local Policies > then Security Options.
In the right hand pane scroll down near the bottom and and go to User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation.

Double click the item and choose Disable. Then click Ok.

Now you won’t be bothered with the screen blanking out anymore.

There have been many reports on the web about networking and Windows Vista and how slow it is when moving file between your computers, especially involving gigabit networks and also to a lesser extent 100 megabit networks. If you’re a regular reader you know we discussed some ways to improve this issue by turning off RDC Remote Differential Compression and it helped a little, but for the most part the problem remained, and I learned to live with it.

Then a reader named Tarrant1701 posted a comment in my follow-up post about RDC asking about his slow networking speeds on his gigabit network and we got into a Email discussion about various web pages we’ve come across and things to try to increase his speed, the culmination of which resulted in his finding a Microsoft Knowledge Base article number 948066 that describes the problem in detail and offers a solution to fix it.

Its seems the problem stems from Multimedia programs like Windows Media Player and Media Center requiring more network resources so Vista starts throttling network packets to restrict the processing of non-multimedia network traffic. Hear’s what MS has to say about it.

The throttling will come into effect only when you are running multimedia programs that are time sensitive. However, this throttling mechanism can potentially cause a decrease in network performance during the active multimedia playback period. This decrease in performance is likely to occur only on high speed networks that are saturated to maximum capacity.

But testing done by Tarrant1701 have shown.

if I have vista media center running in the background, then I get the 16 MB/sec transfer speeds. If i completely exit out of VMC and do another transfer, then I get 35 MB/sec!
somehow, having VMC running really slows down network transfers (even though VMC itself is not actively utilizing the network at all!)

The fix involves editing the Registry to turn off Network Throttling. As always create a System Restore Point to backup your Registry, then follow the steps below.

Click the Start Orb and type Regedit in the search box.

Click Regedit.exe at the top of the search results under programs.

if you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

Navigate to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionMultimediaSystemProfile

In the right hand pane double click NetworkThrottlingIndex and type in FFFFFFFF (that’s 8 F’s) in the Hexadecimal field.

Click Ok and restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

I spoke to Tarrant1701 this morning to see if he was having any problems after about a week of use and he said

I’ve had no problems at all. Am able to watch DVR-MS files on the host HTPC and copy a different DVR-MS at 45 MB/sec to my desktop PC without any glitches.

As always your results may vary.

Microsoft says you can adjust the NetworkThrottlingIndex from 1 to 70 in the Decimal value with 10 being the default.

If you have playback problems in Media Center try adjusting the Decimal values.

in conclusion I’d like to thank Tarrant1701 for all the testing he done and help he’s provided.

What going on you say how do i get them back to the perfect size I like them. Or maybe you just want them bigger or smaller. Here’s how.

Well if you have a scroll mouse and you probably do, just click an empty space on the desktop and then hold down the CTRL key. Then rotate the scroll wheel up or down to make the icons bigger or smaller.

If you don’t have a scroll wheel, mouse here’s another way.

Right click the desktop and choose Personalize .

Click Window Color and Appearance,

Click Open Classic Appearance Properties For More Color Options.

Now in the Appearance tab, click the Advanced button, choose Icon from the drop- down Item box, and use the up and down arrows in the size box to make the icons look just the size you want.

Click Ok twice and your all set.

You can also change many other options here so give it try.

This tip requires editing the Registry so its a good idea to create a Restore Point first.

Click the Start Orb and type Regedit in the search box.

Click Regedit.exe at the top of the search results under programs.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

Navigate to the following key.HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsDWM

Click on an empty space in the right hand pane and choose New DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Give the new DWORD a name of AnimationsShiftKey

Double click the AnimationsShiftKey value and give it a value of 1. Then click Ok.

Close the Registry editor an logoff then log back on for the changes to take effect.

Now just hold down the shift key when clicking a flip 3D window or opening or closing a window from the task bar.

SCREEN SHOTS

1. Click the Start Orb and type Regedit in the search box.
2. Click Regedit.exe at the top of the search results under programs.

3. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

4. Navigate to the following key.

Here’s a simple way to do it, Thanks to Scott for sending in this tip.

Create a Restore Point to backup your registry.

Right click an empty space on your desktop and choose New > Text Document.

Copy the text below and paste it into your new Text document.Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*shellrunas]
@=”Take Ownership”
“Extended”=”"
“NoWorkingDirectory”=”"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*shellrunascommand]
@=”cmd.exe /c takeown /f “%1″ && icacls “%1″ /grant

administrators:F”
“IsolatedCommand”=”cmd.exe /c takeown /f “%1″ && icacls “%1″

/grant administrators:F”

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryshellrunas]
@=”Take Ownership”
“Extended”=”"
“NoWorkingDirectory”=”"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryshellrunascommand]
@=”cmd.exe /c takeown /f “%1″ /r /d y && icacls “%1″ /grant

“IsolatedCommand”=”cmd.exe /c takeown /f “%1″ /r /d y && icacls

“%1″ /grant administrators:F /t”

Click file > Save As > name the file Take Ownership.reg (its very important to make sure the extension is .reg and not .txt)

Double click the Take Ownership.reg file on your desktop to apply it to the registry.

Click yes to the security prompt from the registry editor.

Click Ok in the confirmation dialog box and you finished.

Now when you right click a file or folder you will be offered the Take Ownership option.

When you start your computer using a regular startup, many programs start automatically and run the background. Sometimes quite a few. These programs may include third-party antivirus programs and system utility programs. These programs may interfere and slow down your performance when you install, run, or use a game or program such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, Microsoft Halo 2 for Windows Vista or Microsoft Streets and Trips.

When this occurs, you can use a clean boot procedure to prevent these programs and utilities from starting automatically. You must be logged on as an administrator to perform a clean boot procedure. If the computer is connected to a network, the network policy settings may prevent you from completing the clean boot procedure.

When you use a clean boot procedure to start your computer, Microsoft Windows only starts basic devices and services it needs. So lets get started and speed up your gaming performance. This tip will also speed up some programs for Video or Picture editing or anything that requires a lot of system resources.

(Note You may experience a temporary loss of some services functionality when you follow these steps. When you restore the settings, the functionality will be restored.)

1. Click StartStart Orb, type msconfig in the Start Search box.

2. Click Msconfig at the top of search results.

5. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

6. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All. I have a fairly clean install but you may notice many more in your setup.

5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

You should notice a marked speed improvement in your gaming. If for some reason you experience problems, go back into the services tab and one by one turn things back on.

You can increase the performance of your computers SATA hard drives by enabling Write Caching.

What is Write caching you ask.

When write caching is enabled, when the system sends a write to the hard disk, the logic circuit records the write in its much faster cache, and then immediately sends back an acknowledgement to the operating system saying, in essence, “all done!” The rest of the system can then proceed on its merry way without having to sit around waiting for the actuator to position and the disk to spin, and so on. This is called write-back caching, because the data is stored in the cache and only “written back” to the platters later on.

Write-back functionality of course improves performance. There’s a catch however. The drive sends back saying “all done” when it really isn’t done–the data isn’t on the disk at all, it’s only in the cache. The hard disk’s logic circuits begin to write the data to the disk, but of course this takes some time. The hard disk is using a variant of that old “the check is in the mail” trick you might hear when you call someone to remind them of that loan they were supposed to pay back three weeks ago. (Read more from the Pcguide)

Here’s how to enable it. (Caution this should not be used for external drives.) And you also have a UPS installed.

Click the Start Orb and start typing Device Manager in the search box.

Click Device Manager under the Programs section at the top.

Approve the UAC if prompted.

Click the small + next to Disk Drives.

Right click the hard drive and choose Properties.

Click the Policies tab.

Put a checkmark in Enable Write Caching on the Disk.

Put a checkmark in Enable Advanced Performance. (This option enables extremely aggressive write caching, which can speed up drive access but also cause you to lose data if the power goes out suddenly.)

Click Ok and your finished.

To see Screen shots for the process, Click the Read the rest of this entry link.

1. Click the Start Orb and start typing Device Manager in the search box.

2. Click Device Manager under the Programs section at the top.

There’s been a lot of talk on the net lately about Vista and Remote Differential Compression slowing down file transfers. So I decided to give it a test.

Remote Differential Compression (RDC) allows data to be synchronized with a remote source using compression techniques to minimize the amount of data sent across the network. (From Microsoft)

I did a test on my home network to see if it really did slow down file transfers. I set up a 4.35 gig test file and transferred to a different hard drive inside my computer. I then transferred the same file across my home wired network to a different computer. I also performed the same test in Windows XP in my dual boot configuration.. Here are the results.

4.35 Gig test file, Windows Vista with Remote Differential Compression on.

Hard drive to Hard drive: 3:12 Computer to Computer: 13:54

4.35 Gig test file, Windows Vista with Remote Differential Compression off.

Hard drive to Hard drive: 2:47 Computer to Computer: 13:03

We could all use some more time in our lives, so here’s a way to shave a few seconds every time we need to Shutdown, Reboot or Logoff your computer. Lets create 3 desktop icons to Shutdown, Restart or Logoff your computer with 1 click.

This tip was very popular on my other Blog at KevinsCrate.com/blog so I updated it for Vista and add it here.

Right Click a open area of your Desktop and choose New > Shortcut.

The Create a Shortcut Wizard will appear. Type “shutdown -s -t 00″ without the quotes in the location box. This will create the Shutdown Icon. Click next

Use the name offered Shutdown.exe Click finish.

Now you have your Shutdown Icon on your desktop.

To create an icon for Restart Type follow the same instructions but type “shutdown -r -t 00″ in the Create shortcut wizard and then name the icon Restart.

To create an icon for Logoff Type follow the same instructions but type “shutdown -l -t 00″ in the Create shortcut wizard and then name the icon Logoff.

Now we need to change those default icons to something snazzier.

Right click the Shutdown Icon and choose Properties. Then click Change Icon.

Now you can choose what ever icon you like, then click Ok.

Now do the same for the other 2 icons and your all set.

Here are the codes one more time.

shutdown -s -t 00 (for shutdown)
shutdown -r -t 00 (for restart)
shutdown -l -t 00 (for logoff)

When you’re navigating your files in Windows Explorer the options in the right click menu are very helpful you can open files, cut, copy, paste, send to and others but there a two that are missing. How about if you could add Move to and Copy to a folder. This little trick has saved me countless time. This Tweak requires editing the Registry so create a restore point before you try this. Here’s how the right click menu looks before the tweak.

I routinely copy or move multiple files around all my networked computers and hard drives. The old way was to hold down the Control Key (Ctrl) and select the files you want by clicking them in series.

Well I found a easer way to do the same thing. Instead of having to hold the control-key down to make multiple selections, make this change and whenever you roll your mouse over a file, you will see an unchecked checkbox next to it. Click that checkbox and it becomes one of your selections. We just need to make a few changes to Explorer.

To make this happen, Open up Windows Explorer, hit the ALT key to bring up the menu. Now click Tools – Folder Options

to bring up the Folder Options dialog box. Click the View tab and, in the Advanced Settings section scroll down until you see “Use check boxes to select items”. Click the checkbox next to this and hit OK.

Now go back to Windows Explorer and start rolling your mouse over some files. You should now see empty checkboxes appear and disappear as your mouse rolls by, just put a check in the files you want to include.
