Here’s a little tip for you to check out if your tired of paying the high prices for Microsoft software and have a few computers in your house. Get a Microsoft Technet Plus subscription. The cost is $349.00 a year, or $249 to renew, with the subscription you get the right to download just about every piece of software Microsoft sells, including every version of Vista, XP, Office and every version of Server.

Check it out for yourself TechNet Plus Overview

Below is one of the great features available with a Technet Plus subscription:

Microsoft software licensed for evaluation purposes: Evaluate full-version commercial products–without time limits or feature limits, including Windows Vistaâ„¢ Microsoft Office System and Exchange Server 2007. With full-version software, IT Professionals can make informed decisions about new technologies and deployments at their own pace.

I signed up in December and so far love it, You can download all the software listed and you get 10 license keys, so you can install it on all your machines, if 10 isn’t enough just ask for 10 more, easy as that.

Now I know they say for its for evaluation purposes but they are full versions with no time limits, and if you don’t renew your subscription at the end of the year the software still will work, and you are evaluating right.

I also found a $100.00 off coupon from Kevin Remde. use the code TMSAM08 when you sigh up. Sorry the code is only good for US residents, and I’m not sure when it expires so act soon.

So here’s a wrap up
Microsoft Technet Plus subscription $249.00

Vista Ultimate Amazon Price $329.99 us
Office 2007 Ultimate Amazon Price $507.49 us
Total $837.48 us

You save $588.48 and that savings is for only 1 computer and 2 pieces of software. Imagine if you have 4 or 5 you want to upgrade.

Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows that starts your computer in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run Windows are started. The words “Safe Mode” appear in the corners of the display to identify which Windows mode you are using. If an existing problem does not reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers as possible causes.

If you don’t know the cause of the problem, you can use the process of elimination to help you find the problem. Try starting all of the programs you commonly use, including the programs in your Startup folder, one by one, to see if a program might be the cause of the problem.

If your computer automatically starts in safe mode without prompting, a problem with your computer might be preventing Windows from starting normally. If you think the cause of the problem might be a recently installed program or device, try using System Restore.

Here is a list of drivers that start in Safe Mode.

Floppy disk drives (internal and USB)
Internal CD-ROM drives (ATA, SCSI)
External CD-ROM drives (USB)
Internal DVD-ROM drives (ATA, SCSI)
External DVD-ROM drives (USB)
Internal hard disk drives (ATA, SATA, SCSI)
External hard disk drives (USB)
Keyboards (USB, PS/2, serial)
Mice (USB, PS/2, serial)
VGA display cards (PCI, AGP)

Flavors of Safe Mode:

Safe mode with networking:
Starts Windows in safe mode and includes the network drivers and services needed to access the Internet or other computers on your network.

Safe mode with command prompt:
Starts Windows in safe mode with a command prompt window instead of the usual Windows interface. This option is intended for IT professionals and administrators.

Enable boot logging:
Creates a file, ntbtlog.txt, that lists all the drivers that are installed during startup and that might be useful for advanced troubleshooting.

Enable low resolution video (640 × 480)
Starts Windows using your current video driver and using low resolution and refresh rate settings. You can use this mode to reset your display settings.

Last Known Good Configuration:
Starts Windows with the last registry and driver configuration that worked successfully.

Directory services restore mode:
Starts Windows domain controller running Active Directory so that the directory service can be restored. This option is intended for IT professionals and administrators.

Debugging mode:
Starts Windows in an advanced troubleshooting mode intended for IT professionals and system administrators.

Disable automatic restart on system failure:
Prevents Windows from automatically restarting if an error causes Windows to fail. Choose this option only if Windows is stuck in a loop where Windows fails, attempts to restart, and fails again repeatedly.

Disable Driver Signature Enforcement:
Allows drivers containing improper signatures to be installed.

(From the Windows help file)

Well let me tell you I found a great new file manager called XYplorer it has a 30 day trial and costs $25.00 and is worth every penny. Give it a try.

XYplorer [eks-wai-plorer] is a multi-tabbed file manager for Windows (98, NT, ME, 2000, XP, XP x64, 2003, Vista, Vista x64) targeting everybody who is looking for a real alternative to Explorer. Let’s focus on a number of XYplorer’s usability and efficiency highlights many of which no other file manager has to offer.

Usability and efficiency highlights

1. Tabbed Browsing: Have an unlimited number of tabs to make jumping around between folders a one click affair. Rename the tabs, drag-shift them around, hide them, lock them, drag-n-drop stuff onto the tab headers… the tabs remember their configuration individually and between sessions.

2. Searches in Tabs: You often search your system for files added in the last 24 hours? You quickly need a list of all text files containing your name? Let a “finding tab” do this or any other search job at a single click!

3. The Address Bar accepts not just folders, but also files, URLs, and search terms. Yes, you can enter search patterns directly into the Address Bar. Simply put “?” between location and search pattern (Boolean operators and Regular Expressions allowed).

4 & 5. The Tree and List offer a suite of unique highlighting options to increase visual grip. Highlight Folder, Boxed Branch, Favorite Folder Bold, Highlight Focused Row, Highlight Sorted Column, Colored Grid, … all colors are fully customizable. And then there’s wildcard-configurable Color Coding for list items. Color code your files and folders now!

6. Catalog: Your favorite locations reside deep down in some heavily nested structures? Lift them to the surface! Your current project forces you to repeatedly ride from one end of your hard disk (or LAN) to the other? Join them within the flat hierarchy of a Catalog Category, and reduce their mutual distance to 18 pixels! Which means you got an easy one-click access to your most commonly used folders while maintaining a synchronized tree view! By the way, you can also drop stuff onto the Catalog’s items: file management cannot get any cooler!

7. Info Panel: The hideable tabbed panel at the bottom provides quick access to information (file properties and previews) and action (Find Files, Reports).

If you need a fast and friendly image browser, sound browser, or video browser, it’s here: Instant, one-click preview of image (incl. PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, TGA, ICO and many more, using high-quality resampling for shrinking/zooming), audio (incl. WAV, MP3, OGG, APE, etc.), and video (MPG, AVI, MOV, QT, VOB, TS, WMV, etc. … not to forget FLV/YouTube) files, with display of detailed media information.

8. Find Files: XYplorer is a file manager featuring a high-end search engine with tremendous power and amazing speed. It fully supports Boolean logic (256 levels nesting depth!), advanced pattern matching, Regular Expressions, whole word and fuzzy matching, content search (i.e. text strings inside files), multiple location search, and much more.

Disk defragmentation describes the process of consolidating fragmented files on your computer’s hard disk.

Fragmentation happens to a hard disk over time as you save, change, or delete files. The changes that you save to a file are often stored at a location on the hard disk that’s different from the original file. Additional changes are saved to even more locations. Over time, both the file and the hard disk itself become fragmented, and your computer slows down as it has to look in many different places to open a file.

Disk Defragmenter is a tool that rearranges the data on your hard disk and reunites fragmented files so your computer can run more efficiently. In this version of Windows, Disk Defragmenter runs on a schedule so you don’t have to remember to run it, although you can still run it manually or change the schedule it uses.

Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer. Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your hard disk can work more efficiently. Disk Defragmenter runs on a schedule, but you can also defragment your hard disk manually.

Disk Defragmenter might take from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size and degree of fragmentation of your hard disk. You can still use your computer during the defragmentation process.(from the windows help files)

The Disk Defragmenter Will run automatically if set up correctly. Here’s how to check it.

Click the Start Orb.

Start typing Disk in the search box.

At the top of the menu under Programs click Disk Defragmenter.

Click continue if prompted by the UAC.

Make sure Run on a schedule is checked.

If you don’t like the time provided click Modify schedule, and choose How often, what day and what time you prefer.

Click Ok twice when finished.

You can also run Disk Defragmenter from the Command Prompt with more options. Here’s how.

Click the Start Orb.

Type CMD in the search box.

At the top of the menu under Programs right click CMD.exe and choose run as administrator.

Click continue if prompted by the UAC.

In the Command window type Defrag.exe.

Below you will see the options available. As you can see there are many different way you can run the Disk Defragmenter from the command prompt.

Here’s a tip to save you a few seconds of searching for frequently accessed files or folders. Open up Windows Explorer or My computer and look to the upper left side and you’ll see Favorite Links section. Now just locate a file or folder you open a lot and drag it to the Favorite Links section, and it will create a shortcut there. You can add as many as you like, and drag then to any order you like.

Now next time you open Explorer you can quickly find to your file or folder.

If you want to get rid of an item just right click and choose Remove Link.

Windows Vista comes with a virtual onscreen keyboard that you can use in an emergency if your regular one fails, but only if you have a shortcut to it that you can click with your mouse. This has saved my bacon once already so I thought I’d pass it along. Now I’m not saying its a pleasure to use but in an emergency it will do.

Click the Start Orb and type OSK into the Start menu’s Search box.

At the top of the screen you will see the results of the search. Right click OSK under Programs and drag it to your Desktop. You can rename if you like by right clicking the icon and choosing rename. Now if your keyboard goes kaput you can just click the Keyboard icon and finish what you were working on.

Here are answers to some common questions about System Restore.

How does System Restore work?
System Restore uses restore points to return your system files and settings to an earlier point in time, without affecting personal files.

How do I start System Restore?
Click Start > type System Restore in the search box > Click System Restore under the Program section. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Can I undo the changes System Restore makes?
Yes. Every time you use System Restore, a restore point is created before proceeding, so you can undo the changes if they don’t fix your problem. If you use System Restore when the computer is in safe mode, you cannot undo the restore operation. However, you can run System Restore again and choose a different restore point if one exists.

To undo the changes System Restore makes
Open System Restore.? If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Click Undo System Restore, and then click Next. Review your choices, and then click Finish.

What files are changed during a system restore?
System Restore affects Windows system files, programs, and registry settings. It can also make changes to scripts, batch files, and other types of executable files on your computer.

Note:
System Restore does not affect personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos, so it cannot help you restore a deleted file. If you have backups of your files, you can restore the files from a backup.

Why doesn’t System Restore protect FAT32 disks?
System Restore doesn’t protect FAT32 and other FAT disks because FAT disks don’t support the use of shadow copies. Shadow copies contain information about changes to documents and system files. Shadow copies require the NTFS file system. In this version of Windows, System Restore uses shadow copies to create restore points. If you store system files on a FAT disk, you cannot use System Restore to undo changes.

How do I choose a restore point?
System Restore automatically recommends the most recent restore point created before a significant change, such as installing a program. You can also choose from a list of restore points. Try using restore points created just before the date and time you started noticing problems.

How often are restore points created?
Restore points are created automatically every day, and just before significant system events, such as the installation of a program or device driver. You can also create a restore point manually.

How do I create a restore point manually?
Open System. Click System Protection If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Click the System Protection tab, and then click Create.
In the System Protection dialog box, type a description, and then click Create.

How much hard disk space does System Restore require?
To store restore points, you need at least 300 megabytes (MB) of free space on each hard disk that has System Protection turned on. System Restore might use up to 15 percent of the space on each disk. As the amount of space fills up with restore points, System Restore will delete older restore points to make room for new ones.
System Restore will not run on hard disks smaller than 1 gigabyte (GB).

How long are restore points saved?
Restore points are saved until the hard disk space System Restore reserves is filled up. As new restore points are created, old ones are deleted. If you turn off System Protection (the feature that creates restore points) on a disk, all restore points are deleted from that disk. When you turn System Protection back on, new restore points are created.

How do I turn System Restore on or off?
System Protection, the feature that creates restore points, is on by default. We recommend that you keep System Protection turned on for all hard disks that contain important files so that you can use System Restore if you need to.
To turn System Restore on or off
Open System Restore. Click System Protection tab. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
To turn on System Protection for a hard disk, select the check box next to the disk, and then click OK.
? or ?
To turn off System Protection for a hard disk, clear the check box next to the disk, and then click OK.

I have an earlier version of Windows on my computer, but when I switch between versions, my restore points disappear. Why?
In this version of Windows, restore points are created differently and are not recognized by earlier versions of Windows. If you have a dual-boot configuration and you start an earlier version of Windows, the earlier version will delete any restore points created by this version of Windows. If you start this version of Windows, restore points will resume being created automatically.

What if System Restore doesn’t fix the problem?
If System Restore doesn’t fix the problem, you can undo the restore operation or try choosing a different restore point. If System Restore does not display any restore points to choose from, make sure you have System Protection turned on and that you have at least 300 MB of free space left on your hard disk. (From Microsoft)

For example, if you have more than one web browser installed on your computer, you can choose one of them to be the default browser.

To open the Default Programs screen, Click Start-Default Programs.

Set your default programs. Use this option to choose which programs you want Windows to use by default. If you want to use your media player to open all media files, use this option.

If a program does not show up in the Programs list:
If a program does not show up in the list, you can make the program a default by using Set Associations.

1. Click to open Default Programs.

2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.

3. Click the file type or protocol that you want the program to act as the default for.

4. Click Change program.

5. Click the program that you want to use as the default for the file type you selected, or click the arrow next to Other Programs to show additional programs. (If your program is not listed, click Browse to find the program you want to use, and then click Open. If no other programs are installed that are able to open the file type or protocol, your choices will be limited.)

6. Click OK.

Note:
You cannot change an association for a file type or protocol and leave it blank or disassociated. You must select a new program.

The options you set here only apply to your user account. Your choices won’t affect other user accounts on the computer.

Associate a file type or protocol with a program:
Use this option to fine-tune default programs based on the file type or protocol. For example, you can have all .jpg image files open using a specific program, and .bmp image files open using a different program.

Highlight the file type and choose Change Program, Then choose one from the list.

Change AutoPlay settings:
You can also change which programs to use to start different kinds of media, such as music CDs or DVDs that contain photos.

Click the drop drop down arrow next to what you want to change and choose the action you want to happen.

Set default programs for this computer:
Set Program Access and Computer Defaults is a tool to set default programs for activities such as browsing the web and sending e‑mail for everyone who uses the computer.

User Account Control prevents programs that require permission or an administrator password from running automatically when Windows starts. If a program is blocked, you’ll see a message in the notification area that says some startup programs need permission to run. You can run a blocked program, remove blocked programs from startup, or ignore the notification.

To run a blocked program:

1. Right-click the Blocked startup programs icon in the notification area.

2. Click Run blocked program, and then click the name of the program you want to run. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

You’ll need to repeat these steps each time you want to run the program after starting Windows.

To remove a blocked program from startup:

You can remove a blocked program from startup so that it won’t try to run automatically each time you start Windows. Removing the program from startup won’t remove the program from your computer.

1. Right-click the Blocked startup programs icon in the notification area.

2. Click Show or remove blocked startup programs.

If a program that you want to run at startup is being blocked, check the publisher’s website to see if there is an updated version of the program available that doesn’t require permission or an administrator password to run.

Remember removing a program from startup might affect other users of your computer.
