@Janet: There is another way renaming files without using the explorer. You can use the tool File Renamer:
http://www.sttmedia.com/filerenamer
With this tool it is possible to number files in your user defined order and you can do some other things like searching and replacing in file names. Additionaly, the explorer always adds brakets () around the numbers. In File Renamer you can specify this for your own.

@ Janet, I see what you mean, Your not doing anything wrong, it's the way Vista works. The first file will always be the name and the next one will be 2 then 3 and so on. To do it the way you want you will have to rename each file individually, sorry it's a Vista thing.

I sort my pictures by category I then select all the pictures and right-click on the first picture to rename the pics numerically so they will stay in the order I put them in, such as Field Trip (1), so the rest of the pictures will be Field Trip (2), etc. With Vista they do not rename sequentially, especially if I start with a number other than 1. I might name the first file Field Trip (43), and instead of the rest being labeled (44) on, the next pictures are automatically labeled Field Trip (2), Field Trip (3), etc., and sometimes not in order. I was always able to do this before with small and large files. What am I doing wrong?
