Adjusting Vista’s Error Reporting Tool
First open up the Problem Reports and Solutions page by clicking the Start Orb and typing Problem in the Search box, then Click Problem Reports and Solutions in the results under Programs. If Vista finds any problems they will be listed in the large highlighted box. When you click Check for new solutions Vista will check online for solutions.
You can also click the problems that are pending for more information.
In this example Quicktime has a problem and a link is provided to download the update.
And other time a fix is not available yet. Amazingly I only have a few problems with no fixes yet.
Back on the Main page. If you click View problem history you will see a list of all the problems found and the status of each. You can click on each one for more info.
Back on the main page. Click Change Settings.
In the settings page you can set it to check automatically for solutions to problems it finds or to ask you first.
Now click on the advanced settings.
In the Advanced settings screen you can choose to turn error reporting off completely.
Or choose a setting for different users.
Here you can also choose to send additional info to Microsoft. Here’s what Microsoft says will be sent.
“Sending a problem report allows Windows to notify you if a solution is available. If a solution is not available, you might be asked to provide additional details about the problem to help create one. Additional details can include files or parts of files that help identify the problem or explain how it has affected your computer. Windows does not intentionally collect any personal information, and you can view additional details in a problem report before sending it to Microsoft.”
Now you may or mat not want to send ” files or parts of files “ Because Windows does not intentionally collect any personal information. You may want to leave this one unchecked.
In the next section: Block List. You can choose not to send info on individual programs. Just click the Add button and navigate to the program you want to exclude.
Back to the main page, The last section titled Clear solution and problem history. all it does it delete all the problems found. If you choose to clear the history you won’t be notified if a fix is found.
I hope this helps explains the error reporting tools in Vista.
