Cracking Windows Passwords
It seems like many people are in need of resetting or cracking forgotten passwords lately so I decided to find a good Password Cracking program. After trying out a few I like Ophcrack live CD the best for passwords under 14 characters.
Ophcrack is a Windows password cracker based on rainbow tables. It is a very efficient implementation of rainbow tables done by the inventors of the method. It comes with a GTK+ Graphical User Interface and runs on Windows, Mac OS X (Intel CPU) as well as on Linux.
Get the live CD Here, then burn the .ISO file to a CD Click here for a good burning program
Now restart your computer and boot from the Live CD.
When Ophcrack finishing booting you will be presented with a list of all of the accounts on the computer. Then click Launch to start the program.
Depending on the difficulty of your password it could take a few seconds to a couple minutes. Then right down the password remove the CD and reboot back into Windows and enter your password.
Then create a password reset disk for the next time.
Update 1-15-08 For everyone having problems with Ophcrack Check out Offline NT Password Editor. Below

(As I’m finding out) ror Vista, you have to use the NTHASH tables, which are not included for free with Ophcrack.
I see the table is available to purchase for $240 from Objectif Sécurité (www.objectif-securite.ch).
I’d love to find a free version of the NTHASH tables, or someone who can provide a 1-time use service for it.

Guys,
I was facing the “All Lm hashes are empty, please use NThash tables to crack the remaining hashes” problem.
This post details what I did to get the password on my Vista machine: http://www.slists.com/techytrends//mvnforum/viewthread?thread=322
Worked for me.
